I’m not trying to bash Ciara. At times when reading this, it’s probably going to sound like I am, but I’m not. Ciara burst onto the scene in 2004 at a time when we were in need of a new face. The early 2000’s brought out many a pop singer, including Beyonce, Alicia Keys, Brittney Spears and Ashanti. Ciara took the then dominating genre of Crunk and made it her own, leading the Crunk&B movement. (I didn’t name it that, someone else did.)
If you say you didn’t dance to Goodies, then you’re lying. We all bopped. We knew how to do the 1, 2, Step, and I can recall a bunch of girls in high school trying to roll their hips like they were in the ‘Oh‘ video. Her next album Ciara: The Evolution was actually an improvement from her first album. It showed growth as a person and in her music. “Promise” gave us straight up Aaliyah and we were all here for it.
However, fast forward a couple of years. Her singles aren’t selling as much as they used to. When it comes to albums, she’s also fallen. Fans of hers would claim that ‘people don’t buy albums anymore’ but that’s not really an excuse when artists such as Beyonce and Rihanna can make people buy their music and in the case of Beyonce without a single at all.
About a month ago, Ciara announced that she would be embarking on the ‘Jackie’ tour. Dates for the tour were announced and people were excited. Others, myself included were scratching our heads wondering how she was going to announce a tour without even saying her album release date.
Ciara has apparently figured out something that Madonna and Janet Jackson are all too familiar with. Touring is where the money is at. Madonna only comes out with albums at this point to tour. At this point, Ciara seems to understand that she’s not going to sell like Beyonce or Rihanna. ‘Jackie’ only sold 20,000 copies in its first week. That’s incredibly low for an artist whose been doing this for ten years now. She’s probably realized that her vocals, though they’ve grown, aren’t going to be the most powerful. In realizing these things, she’s figured out that what she can do better than most is perform.
The ‘Jackie‘ tour has received great reviews. Ciara can out dance your fave. It’s a fact. She and Chris Brown are the premier dancers of the current generation. She’s been promoting the hell out of the album and hasn’t had any bad performances of the lead single from the album ‘I Bet.’
People have probably assumed that Ciara wouldn’t be around at this point in time. However, she’s proven she has staying power. She’s developed a loyal fan base who supports her in everything she does.
